Halftime Musings: Kansas honors seniors, builds 41-33 halftime lead over Kansas State
Senior Night started with 7 players being honored before the game, with beloved walk-on Michael Jankovich getting the start for the Kansas Jayhawks on the final home game of his career. While the start was a bit bumpy at times, the Jayhawks were able to overcome a run from the Kansas State Wildcats to build a 41-33 lead at the half. Here are some of the things I noticed in that first half.
Need More Focus
It's hard to not get hyped up on Senior Night, but the hype has led to some foul trouble on key players, including KJ Adams and Dajuan Harris. They don't normally have issues with foul trouble, but it is clear that the frustration they are causing for the Wildcats is being returned to them. Kansas hasn't really turned the ball over, but they have struggled with finishing shots and keeping their composure at times.
Foul Shots
The Jayhawks have a huge edge at the free throw line, as an extremely physical game has gotten out of hand and led to a ton of foul calls. There is plenty of reason for both teams to be upset with the way the game was originally called, with a ton of contact being ignored for the early portion of the game. But the Jayhawks have continued to attack the Wildcats, earning plenty of opportunities at the line. They are 16-18 so far in the game, while Kansas State is just 7-13. The foul shooting is a huge boost for the squad.
Suffocating Defense
The Jayhawks have a great defense, but this game looks like they took it to another level. They have 4 blocks, have allowed 42% shooting from Kansas State, given up no offensive rebounds and no fast break points. The seven turnovers they have forced have included six steals. Despite the foul issues, Kansas has been very aggressive and has been frustrating Kansas State for the entire first half.
