Player Ratings to the Theme of Rain - Kansas Jayhawks at Texas Tech Red Raiders
Kansas was raining down threes last night, so why not rate the players to types of rain? Yeah, let’s do that. As always, the criteria:
Contents
5 Stars: Out of this world performance. This is a hard to achieve rating and is only reserved for the most impressive or impressionable performances.
4.5 Stars: Very strong performance, packed the stat sheet, provided undeniable intangibles.
4 Stars: A strong performance that falls just short of the standards above.
3.5 Stars: Above average performance, perhaps stands out in one category or one aspect of the game.
3 Stars: Average performance. Also could be a very strong game in one aspect but a very poor game in another such as 15 points but seven turnovers. Could also be that the player played, did their job, but didn't do much spectacularly.
2 Stars: Below average performance, or we simply have higher expectations for the player on this particular night.
1 Star: Rare, but if a player has a stinker in all aspects.
Chris Teahan Memorial No Star: Named after the mullet wonder and is awarded to the player(s) who didn't have enough playing time to contribute or whose performance isn't worthy of a rating for another reason.
5 Stars: A soft summer rain
It’s 90 degrees outside. The sun is shining. And then, like magic, there is a brief respite from the heat. I love a quick shower in the middle of a summer day, one that doesn’t make it immediately more humid, but one that makes it refreshing if only for a few minutes. Add in a rainbow and you have a six star rain.
Dajuan Harris canned all five threes that he took and was the star of the show. The “most underrated player” in the country might not be so underrated after that performance. Finished with 18 points and won Kansas that game. What a night.
4.5 Stars: Rain in a drought
Farmers would toss this one up to the five star. But seriously, when no rain has come for an extended period of time, nothing is more satisfying than seeing the clouds roll in.
KJ Adams continues to shine. Perhaps the Draymond Green comps are a bit too much, but right now KJ is doing everything right. It’s impossible to see another one of KU’s bigs coming in and being as productive. Fourteen points and five boards is pretty nice. And that monster slam at the end? Unquestionably awesome.
Bobby Pettiford was great last night. He was scoring, he was assisting, he was rebounding (7/6/4). This is the Pettiford Bill Self was always raving about. More please.
4 Stars: Early spring showers
Those early spring rains that make everything green are amazing, when they come in the right doses. No one wants constant rain, but when they are sporadic, they are certainly life giving and can be life affirming.
Gradey Dick continues to do things other than score threes. He was the team’s leading rebounder with eight and his key play was the hustle he displayed after a missed shot where he grabbed his own rebound and scored two. Finished with 11 points.
Jalon Wilson’s first half was a five star performance. But as time went on, he was just jacking up too many shots. Love the confidence, but probably should spread it around a bit more. Finished with 16 points and six rebounds.
3.5 Stars: Late spring showers
This is the time when rain is welcome but maybe it’s rained too much and all you want is summer.
Cam Martin came in and provided exactly what is expected: toughness and rebounding. Got a basket and had a few key tip outs. This guy will be handy in the inevitable rock fight game that’s probably coming up quickly.
3 Stars: Thunderstorms
On one hand these can be massively damaging. On the other, they can be some of the most beautiful (from a distance!) natural sights on Earth. The perfect three star.
Not the best day for Kevin McCullar as F bomb chants and relentless boos came flying down from the Texas Tech crowd. On another note, I don’t seem to remember a bunch of profanity directed at Bryce Thompson when he returned to Allen Fieldhouse but I guess some fan bases are just built differently. Anyway, Kev got the last laugh and Kansas won, so we’re all good. Finished with seven points after starting the game in foul trouble.
Zuby Ejiofor had a rebound and an assist in limited minutes.
2 Stars: Freezing rain
Nobody likes this. I mean, just snow if it's going to be cold, it’s less dangerous.
No one was a two.
1 Stars: Torrential Damaging Storms
Hurricanes. Mudslides. Flooding. Nope. Easy one star.
No one was a one either.
Chris Teahan Memorial No Star:
MJ Rice played sparingly.
