Texas at Kansas Basketball Predictions: Home Sweet Home
The Kansas Jayhawks broke their losing streak on the road with a come-from-behind win against the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman last week. And they benefitted from not having a midweek game this week. Despite that, there are still some potential worries about the health of individual players as the Texas Longhorns come to town.
Like most teams in the Big 12 this year, the Longhorns have struggled a bit on the road, although they have one of the better road records in the conference. They have enough talent on paper to cause problems for the Jayhawks, but they haven't really shown that potential on the court.
Can Kansas hold off the Longhorns and build another winning streak? Or will the lack of depth finally lead to a loss at home this season?

I know Bill Self said that Kevin McCullar was going to have to play with some pain in his knee for the rest of the season, but this stretch of a week between games has to be doing him some good and therefore, doing Kansas some good. Hunter Dickinson is coming off a monster game against Oklahoma and I’m looking for more from him against Texas. And speaking of Texas, they need this one. Badly. The preseason number 18 ranked Longhorns and preseason third place pick in the Big XII have struggled mightily this conference season and I don’t see this team, once KU’s biggest conference rival, coming into Allen Fieldhouse and winning this one. I’ll take nice days from the aforementioned Dickinson and McCullar and add in a Nick Timberlake breakout game for a Jayhawk win.

Kansas is coming off a tough stretch recently even despite defeating a top 25 ranked team in the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas has been fairly impressive in their last few games aside from their loss against the Cougars. I think this game is close and the Jayhawks narrowly escape.

Kansas is 14-0 at home, while Texas has struggled on the road coming in with a road record of 3-4. Between the Longhorn’s struggles on the road, the Jayhawk’s dominance at home, and McCullar becoming more healthy I see the Jayhawks beating the Longhorns in dominating fashion off of a big game from Hunter Dickinson.

It’s Allen Fieldhouse so this shouldn’t be a sweat, right? On a serious note, as I wrote about in this week’s Oread Observations, this is the time of year when KU should be leaning on Hunter Dickinson, and I like his matchup this weekend against UT. If he plays to his peak the Jayhawks should handle their business, even with a limited Kevin McCullar.

Bill Self indicated that Kevin McCullar may not be available tomorrow, especially since he "wasn't able to do anything" this week in practice. At the very least I'm not expecting him to be at full strength. But many of the things they do well were still happening when McCullar was out, and the play of Hunter Dickinson and KJ Adams are going to probably be much more important in the outcome. Plus, less minutes for McCullar should lead to a bigger opportunity for Jamari McDowell to show what he can do. It appears there is some desire in the program to get him on the floor more, and Texas isn't formidable enough to derail that plan.
Kansas 72, Texas 68.
