LIVE: Updates and Scores from Kansas vs Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl
The Kansas Jayhawks are in Memphis to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, and fans are understandably excited for the first postseason football for their team since 2008.
I'll be giving updates live from the stadium throughout the game here, so make sure you check back frequently. You can also follow live updates on the Rock Chalk Podcast and Blue Wings Rising Twitter accounts, and join the conversation in our Discord server.
8:52pm: That will do it. Kansas loses as Jason Bean passes on the run and is way off target. The comeback falls short.
8:44pm: What a wild sequence. Kansas gets penalized, converts it anyway, and then Jalon Daniels scores the touchdown. He is short on the two point try, but Arkansas gets called for targeting, so Kansas gets another shot.
8:33pm: Arkansas scores first in the second overtime, and they convert the 2-point try. Kansas needs to score here to get it to 2-point tries.
8:25pm: Questionable playcalling for Kansas is made moot by a great play by Jalon Daniels to get the touchdown on a throw to Jared Casey. But Arkansas answers and we head to overtime number 2.
8:15pm: I think that I can honestly say this is the most crazy end of a game I've seen.
8:12pm: This:
8:10pm: KANSAS TIES IT UP!!!
8:07pm: I'm stunned....
7:59pm: The fumble gave Kansas hope, but a sack there means that Kansas is REALLY short on time now. It's still basically over, but it's not technically over yet.
7:54pm: That first down makes it all but official. Arkansas has the ball 2nd and 11 at the Kansas 30 with 3 minutes to go. The Jayhawks have no more timeouts. The score is 15.
7:46pm: The fourth down pass falls incomplete. It's going to be hard for Kansas fans to feel like their team should have won this one.
7:43pm: Arnold with an amazing catch!
7:41pm:
7:36pm: Kansas gets off the field. As we've seen, this is a defense that plays much better in the second half, and they have made a ton of adjustments to give the Jayhawks a chance here.
7:33pm: The Kansas defense is fired up and not ready to concede this one yet, so there's at least that.
7:31pm: Kansas missed a huge opportunity there with that three and out. With how many missed opportunities they had tonight, it could be tough to stomach this if it stays this close.
7:25pm: Big stop for Kansas after a penalty on a broken play makes it 3rd and 17. Kansas has the ball with an opportunity.
7:15pm: Kansas settles for a field goal. But they are back within two scores. Can they do enough?
7:11pm: It's Locklin's turn to be the hero on a drive. He has two big catches so far this drive and Kansas is threatening heading into the 4th.
7:08pm: Tide is starting to turn a bit for Kansas. Big touchdown followed by a huge three-and-out. Kansas gets the ball back.
7:02pm: Quick drive for Kansas ends in a touchdown for Ky Thomas!
Luke Grimm was the star of that drive, with two huge catches to set Arkansas back on their heels.
6:54pm: Kansas got the stop here on defense, but I'm thinking they were a bit fortunate on the penalties.
6:52pm: Kansas has all of a sudden gone super conservative on offense.
6:48pm: Didn't matter, as Arkansas scores after a long drive down the field. The Kansas defense looks gassed.
6:35pm: Kansas can't get anything on their first drive, and the pooch punt in the perfect position where a gamble on fourth makes sense has you wondering if they goal now is to try and avoid the margin getting much worse.
6:08pm: Kansas defense just had a Jekyll and Hyde moment. Gave up a huge run after Phelps somehow missed a sack, and then Kenny Logan pushed him while out of bounds. But then OJ Burroughs kept Arkansas off the board with a huge interception in the end zone.
6:02pm: Touchdown for Kansas on an effective drive down the field. The 2-point try was not successful.
5:54pm: Kansas is driving, and Quentin Skinner just got leveled on a pass over the middle. No flag was a bit surprising. But he is up and ok it seems.
5:51pm: Arkansas scored again. It's not looking good for Kansas right now.
5:44pm: Kansas seemed to dodge a bullet with a penalty flag getting picked up, but Arkansas got a huge run up the middle to get deep into Kansas territory again.
5:37pm: Kansas can't do anything with it. The offense is really sputtering right now. Daniels is not playing well right now.
5:33pm: The defensive line bailed out the Kansas offense there. Big three and out forced and Kansas will get the ball back at their own 45 after a good bounce and Arkansas penalty.
5:29pm: Another long drive by Kansas ends empty, as Daniels and Grimm run different plays and the result is an interception. This could get ugly without a defensive stop.
5:20pm: First quarter is over as Devin Neal catches a 15-yard pass to try and get some positive momentum going. But it's been a record-setting first quarter for Arkansas.
5:16pm: Kansas is giving out yards like candy right now. Arkansas is doing basically whatever they want. Arkansas scores again, but it is being reviewed.
5:11pm: Big mistake from Daniels there leads to an Arkansas interception.
5:10pm: Kansas offense is back at it. Huge catches by Arnold and Locklin to put Kansas deep in Arkansas territory.
5:06pm: What a drastic swing. Kansas fumbles the kickoff and then immediately gives up another touchdown. Just like that we are seeing a double-digit deficit.
5:03pm: Arkansas made quick work of that drive. The momentum swing in the last few minutes was huge.
4:58pm: Kansas had a cursed drive there, narrowly avoiding a turnover and going three and out.
Almost got the ball back on the punt, but the refs ruled that the Arkansas player was blocked into the ball.
4:54pm: Kansas got off the field on third down!
4:50pm: Kansas moves efficiently down the field to take the lead! Daniels hit a WIDE OPEN Ky Thomas to take the lead. The fans on Twitter approve:
4:47pm: Kansas already hitting some big plays.
4:41pm: Arkansas strikes first, but Kansas holds them to just a field goal. Have to think that both teams felt pretty good about that start.
4:38pm: An awfully familiar sight for Kansas as they get it to third down but can't get off the field.
4:34pm: Kansas wins the toss and defers to the second half.
4:09pm: Some lineup updates, including a couple updates that seemed likely based on the depth chart update we posted earlier today.
4:05pm: Kansas fans showing out well so far, with the stands on their side (below the press box) pretty full in comparison to across the stadium.
3:35pm: Kansas fans excited to see their team.
