Previewing the 2024 Signing Class - 88 Days Until Kansas Football
In college football, the mark of a healthy program is in more than just the results on the field or the players that are getting ready to join that program. It's just as important to see positive momentum in recruiting for years coming up. And while it is still really early, the Kansas Jayhawks have gotten some recent commitments that should make you feel good about future seasons. With only 5 players committed so far, it's not as impressive as the signing haul from this year, but it does have the beginnings of a solid class.
So let's take a look at which players are already committed and why they could be an important piece for the Jayhawks in 2024.
Isaiah Marshall
6'0" 199lb QB
Southfield A&T HS (Southfield, MI)
A dual-threat quarterback who committed to the Jayhawks back in February, Marshall has a lot of connections to the program already. He attends the same high school that Lorenzo McCaskill did, and is also familiar with Kansas linebacker Rich Miller.
He visited Kansas twice, once during the season and also for Junior Day in December. And he has impressed the coaches, enough that he visited with the coaching staff after a game and talked through the offense.
It's easy to see why the Jayhawks are excited about Marshall, as he profiles as a player who has tools that are very similar to another electric player on the roster: starting quarterback Jalon Daniels. Marshall's ability to extend plays especially stood out on his film.
During his junior year, Marshall put up some big numbers, throwing for 2571 yards and 27 touchdowns and rushing for 1065 yards and 18 touchdowns. And the timing of him coming in couldn't be better. Daniels has the option to return in 2024 if he wants, but if he plays as well as we all think he can this year, there is a chance that he declares early. And Marshall could be ready to step in immediately with a similar skill set.
Red Martel
5'10" 200lb RB
Beggs HS (Beggs, OK)
Martel was the first commit of the 2024 class, and the staff seemed very eager to add him to the class, reaching out on the first day allowed. He made two visits to the Jayhawks before committing, seeing wins over Duke and Oklahoma State.
He committed over an offer from Colorado, and will slide into a position group that could be seeing a lot of players leave after this year. Both Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw will be seniors in 2024, with no guarantee that either of them actually returns. The only other scholarship player currently with the program that will be on the roster is Johnny Thompson, who debuts for the Jayhawks this year.
Carson Bruhn
6'6" 230lb TE
Sioux Center HS (Sioux Center, IA)
Bruhn picked the Jayhawks over offers from fellow Power 5 programs in Kansas State, Minnesota and Missouri, with the early offer paying off for the Jayhawks. He developed a great relationship with Andy Kotelnicki and committed after multiple visits to Lawrence.
He is the 11th ranked 2024 recruit in Iowa, and the 38th ranked TE nationally. He has a lot of experience as a blocking tight end, as his high school only averaged 15 passes in each game last season.
He comes into a very deep room, but that will give him an opportunity to develop his first season.
Aundre Gibson
5'11" 175lb CB
Desert Edge HS (Goodyear, AZ)
Gibson, the 13th ranked player in Arizona, committed to the Jayhawks as a four-star player back in March (he has since dropped to a high 3-star recruit). He has been praised for his verticality in coverage and can provide great run support, all with enough speed to provide solid coverage all over the field.
He has some special teams ability as a returner, and the Jayhawks are always looking for more depth in the defensive backfield. He picked Kansas over Oregon, Oregon State and Washington.
Jonathan Kamara
6'4" 210lb LB/DB
Desert Edge HS (Goodyear, AZ)
Kamara is teammates with Gibson, and has the ability to play in multiple positions. He is currently listed as a safety, but he was being recruited to Kansas as a linebacker. He committed just last week and continues the trend of Kansas really finding success in the state of Arizona.
Kamara had offers from Arizona State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Texas and Washington, among others. The Jayhawks made him a priority in recruiting, with multiple in-person visits to Arizona, and the hype around Kamara has only increased since. He is expected to provide quality depth, and may push for a starting spot early in his career.
He will be visiting in June on an official visit, and Kansas is also recruiting another teammate in Deshawn Warner.
Other Options
The Jayhawks are in on quite a few players, with some potentially big visits coming up in the month of June. Dakyus Brinkley, a 4-star linebacker from Katy, TX, is scheduled to come this weekend, along with 4-star cornerback Austin Alexander out of Chicago Heights, IL. The Jayhawks are the only team that Brinkley has scheduled a visit to, and Alexander has a June 23rd visit to 2023 opponent Illinois scheduled as well.
In all, Kansas has 36 in-person visits scheduled for this month, with all 5 current commits on that list. Included in that list is Georgia linebacker Jacorey Stewart, who recently received an offer and will also be visiting this weekend. He is getting some recent attention from schools like Texas A&M, North Carolina, Mississippi State and fellow Big 12 school UCF.
There will be plenty of big visits coming up, so stay tuned for more news throughout the summer.
