Texas Tech at Kansas game in six-day window for broadcast decision
The Big 12 Conference Championship race is as tight as it can possibly get, with five teams tied for the lead at 4-1 in conference play, and two others right behind at 3-2. With so many teams in the hunt, it's only natural that each week can have huge implications on both the conference standings and which games are the most important to follow.
That's why it wasn't a huge surprise when the Big 12 announced that almost every game was being held for the six-day window, which allows them to wait until next Monday to decide which game is broadcast on each channel.
With so much unknown about the broadcast assignments for next week, there are still a lot of things that will go into deciding when the Jayhawks will kick off next week against Texas Tech:
- Conference Race Implications - The teams that are closer to the top of the standings will naturally draw more attention. A win by the Jayhawks against the Cyclones will do a LOT to get Kansas a favored time slot.
- Competitiveness of the game - Games like West Virginia at Oklahoma is likely to be more competitive than Baylor at Kansas State.
- Bowl Eligibility - Teams that are still competing for bowl eligibility are naturally going to draw more, and so they will likely find their way onto higher profile spots.
- Streaming needs - The Big 12 is still looking to provide more inventory for streaming services, and some teams may be much more likely to get relegated to services like ESPN+
Based on all these factors, the results of this week will have a huge impact. If Kansas wins and Texas Tech beats TCU to keep bowl eligibility a possibility, I could see Kansas making an 11am or 2:30pm appearance on ESPN2 or FS1. A UCF win might be enough to get their game against Oklahoma State on broadcast television. A Texas loss might actually do more to make that game attractive and put it on ABC/ESPN/FOX.
