Is the Kansas Jayhawks defense here to stay? - Rock Chalk Podcast
The game played out completely different from the expectations going in, but the Kansas Jayhawks are 5-0 after the defense stepped up big to defeat the Iowa State Cyclones. And that gave us plenty of things to look at when I was joined by Jordan Guskey of the Topeka Capitol-Journal.
We looked at the keys to this victory, including special teams and the emergence of the defense. But we also dive in to the offensive struggles, trying to determine what might carry over to the next few weeks. And then there is a brief discussion about injuries and the extra exposure brought by College Gameday.
The episode begins by deciding what the most surprising part of this game was: the defensive performance or the huge special team errors for Iowa State. From there, we jump into just how impressive this defensive performance was from the Jayhawks, including discussing how difficult it is to highlight a single performance from the week.
After the break, we looked into the issues that plagued the offense in this game. And looking at the tape, there were some pretty clear explanations for why the Jayhawks were having problems. Plus, we look at how much of the Iowa State defensive performance is repeatable for opponents.
From there, we talk about the outlook and impact of the Daniel Hishaw injury. It's undeniable that things will change somehow, but there is some room for debate on exactly how that will happen.
Of course there is a discussion about ESPN's College Gameday coming to town. That includes not only a discussion about what it means for this program, but also how much of a distraction it might be.
