Check out how far Kentucky's defense fell in the KenPom Rankings
Kentucky went 0-2 on the week, losing two games in Rupp Arena to Florida and Tennessee.
Kentucky almost never lost in Rupp Arena back in the day, but now it seems to happen more often than ever. While Kentucky's offense has been incredible this season, and it is one of the best in John Calipari's tenure at Kentucky, the defense has been bad. Kentucky has lost some games this season where they shot the ball great, but they couldn't get a stop. All of the metrics are down on Kentucky's defense after the two rough games in Rupp Arena, which is fair, knowing these two teams could do whatever they wanted offensively.
After the win over Arkansas, Kentucky's defense was ranked 70th in KenPom, but after the loss to Tennessee, the defense dropped all the way down to 101st. Kentucky's offense is one of the best in college hoops, according to KenPom at 7th, but the defense has held this team back from great success.
Coach Calipari had this to say about Kentucky's defense after the loss to Tennessee, "Some of it in this game – there were things that we talked about. You can't let this team get to the elbows. And we were saying the same thing. We have to be a little more sound defensively in what we are doing, and we are going to have to be a collective defensive team. I keep saying it. If one guy stops playing, it's going to hurt this group. We do it together; we can hold our own. But you've got to rebound. To start the game. Come on- you know. They had too many attempts. Just about each one of them - they scored a basket. That's defense, too, by the way."
If Kentucky can't figure out the defense, it's hard to see a world where this team makes a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Calipari and the coaching staff have a lot to figure out in a short amount of time.
