Florida's leading scorer describes why he was getting clean looks against Kentucky's defense
The Kentucky Wildcats hosted the Florida Gators on Wednesday and lost 94-91 in overtime.
This loss will hurt the Wildcats as you don't want to lose home games, especially ones that are not Quad 1 losses. The same issue arose for this Kentucky team, where they were able to score points but struggled a bit defensively. They held Florida to 41% from the field, which John Calipari was happy with, but the Gators had a lot of open looks. You can tell watching this team that some things are improving defense wise for this Kentucky team mostly thanks to Ugonna Onyenso defending the rim, but the Wildcats still have a ways to go.
A lot of this game came down to the clutch shots the Florida Gators hit late in this game, and many of them were made by Walter Clayton Jr. It seems like every time Kentucky got a little separation, he would sink a three. Clayton Jr. also sank the three that tied the game, sending it into overtime.
Clayton Jr. had this to say about getting the open look in regulation, “I wasn’t surprised at all. ZP [Zyon Pullin] does a great job at attracting the defense. He is a threat, obviously. So, with him driving to the middle, I was able to raise up to the left wing, and Reed [Sheppard] was a little far off me. I came up, closed it out, jumped, and hit the shot.”
During his post-game presser, Clayton Jr. talked about how the Kentucky Wildcats guarding him were biting on every shot fake, making each of his threes open. Kentucky needs to not bite on shot fakes, especially against the best shooter on the floor. Every time you bite on a shot fake, it creates a wide-open look, and he made Kentucky pay.
