Kentucky Briefing: Rob Dillingham is second in the SEC in assists per game

Rob Dillingham has been dishing the basketball early in his Kentucky career.
In this story:

We are six games into the 2023-24 Kentucky basketball season, and freshman guard Rob Dillingham has been incredible for the Cats.

Not only has Dillingham been one of the top scorers for the Cats, averaging 16 points a game, but he also is the team's leading assist man, averaging 5.2 a contest.

We are learning early into the season that Dillingham can fill up a stat sheet.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Dillingham get a triple-double at some point this season. He nearly did it against Marshall, finishing the game with 16 points, eight assists, and five rebounds.

Dillingham's 5.2 assists per game have him second in the SEC behind only Ta'Lon Cooper of South Carolina, who is averaging 5.4 a game.

It would not surprise me to see Dillingham lead the SEC in assists per game this season.

He has proven that he can, of course, score the basketball, but he also loves to find his teammate's open looks and rebound the basketball.

NBA coaches will love to see this, and it could help Dillingham potentially work his name in to lottery pick consideration.

We wrote it

I wrote about a quote from Coach John Calipari talking about DJ Wagner getting going against Marshall.

"The freshman stars for the first few games of the season were Rob Dillingham and Reed Sheppard, and while those two are still playing great basketball, DJ Wagner is warming up at the perfect time."

"Wagner didn't have the start to the season many imagined, but over the past two games has scored 50 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished 11 assists, blocked two shots, and stolen the ball four times."
