SEC Saturday wrap-around: Tennessee survives scare in Athens
The Kentucky Wildcats couldn't put away the Texas A&M Aggies in regulation and ultimately fell in overtime on Saturday, taking their first conference loss and continuing a trend of top ten ranked teams losing on the road.
The SEC is chalk full of talent this year, and going undefeated was never a super realistic task. For Kentucky it does take them out of first place in the conference for now, but as we have already seen virtually anything can happen on any given night in this league.
Below is a look at the other results around the SEC on Saturday, including blowout wins for Florida and Auburn, a scare for Tennessee, and another win for the red-hot Crimson Tide:
Tennessee 85, Georgia 79
The Vols needed an 11-1 run in the final minutes to avoid a loss to Georgia and an 0-2 week after losing to Mississippi State on Wednesday.
Dalton Knecht continued his SEC Player of the Year campaign, dropping 36 points on 12-20 shooting with four rebounds and three assists. Georgia and Tennessee are now both 12-4 on the year and 2-1 in conference play.
Ole Miss 69, Vanderbilt 56
The Rebels used a 41 point first half to pick up their 15th win of the season and send Vanderbilt to an 0-3 start in SEC play.
Ole Miss got 24 points from Matthew Murrell and shot 10-25 (40%) from three, rebounding from last week's blowout loss to Tennessee by beating Florida and Vanderbilt this week and moving to 2-1 in conference play.
South Carolina 71, Missouri 69
It took overtime but the Gamecocks moved to 14-2 on the year and 2-1 in the SEC with a win over the Missouri Tigers.
South Carolina turned it over a whopping 16 times and shot just 40.7% from the field and 29.2% from three, but 21 from B.J Mack was enough to push them past a Tigers team that is now 0-3 in conference play and 8-8 on the year.
Florida 90, Arkansas 68
Arkansas fell to 0-3 in SEC play after getting ran out of the gym in the first half by Todd Golden and the Florida Gators, who picked up their first conference win.
Florida got 20 points from Riley Kugel off the bench, while Tyrese Samuel added 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Arkansas was outrebounded 48-31 as their lack of size continues to be an issue, and stars Tramon Mark and Trevon Brazile shot a combined 9-24 and 1-6 from three in the rout.
Auburn 93, LSU 78
Auburn jumped out to a 51-34 halftime lead and coasted to a comfortable 15 point victory, moving to 3-0 in conference play and picking up another blowout win over a Power-6 opponent.
The Tigers shot 40% (10-25) from three and were led by Chad Baker-Mazara's 19 points and 6 steals off the bench, as well as an 18 point, 7 rebound performance from Johni Broome.
LSU outrebounded Auburn by seven and shot 39.1% from three, but a whopping 17 turnovers ultimately contributed to them dropping to 2-1 in conference play.
Alabama 82, Mississippi State 74
Alabama moves to 3-0 in SEC play with a hard fought win over Mississippi State, thanks to a 22 point performance from Mark Sears and 19 points on five made threes from Latrell Wrightsell off the bench.
Meanwhile Mississippi State drops to 1-2 in league play, with their one win coming against Tennessee. The Bulldogs were a pitiful 15-27 (55.6%) from the free throw line which played a big part in the loss.
