The history of the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry

One of college basketball's biggest rivalries is set to be renewed tomorrow.

One of college basketball's biggest rivalries is set to be renewed tomorrow when the No. 9 Kentucky Wildcats head to the KFC Yum! Center to take on the Louisville Cardinals.

There is a lot of history between the two programs. The first meeting was held on Feb. 15, 1913, at Buell Armory Gymnasium. Kentucky picked up a 34-10 victory. The Wildcats got off to a 4-0 start in the series before Louisville earned its first win on Feb. 27, 1915 at the Louisville YMCA.

The two teams have met at least once each season since 1984. Kentucky holds a 38-17 advantage in the series. The rivalry picked up steam in 2001 when Louisville hired Rick Pitino as its head coach, a role he had held with Kentucky from 1989-1997.

The teams have crossed paths in the NCAA Tournament six times and the Wildcats have been victorious in four of the meetings. The most notable was when Kentucky beat Louisville 69-61 in the 2012 Final Four on the way to its eighth national championship.

The most recent NCAA Tournament game played between the two programs was in the 2014 Sweet Sixteen. Kentucky won that contest 74-69.

The rivalry has been played in eight different cities. Aside from Lexington and Louisville, the teams have met in Evanston, Illinois, Indianapolis, Indiana, Knoxville, Tennessee, New Orleans, Louisiana, New York, New York and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Both teams are among the top of college basketball in all-time wins. Kentucky sits at No. 1 and Louisville sits at No. 30.

Both teams are also in the top 10 when it comes to NBA first-round draft picks. Kentucky has 46 and Louisville has 24.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. ET and ESPN will carry the broadcast.
