Former Louisville Guard Fabio Basili Commits to UT Arlington

Basili is the seventh and final former Cardinal to announce his transfer destination this offseason.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After being one of the first players to depart the Louisville men's basketball program following the end of their 2022-23 season, Fabio Basili has finally found his new home.

The 6-foot-4, 175-pound guard announced Tuesday that he has committed UT Arlington.

Basili is the seventh and final former Cardinal to find his new transfer home. Kamari Lands’ is heading out west to Arizona State, Jae'Lyn Withers is staying in the ACC and transferring to North Carolina, El Ellis pulled a stunner and committed to Arkansas, Devin Ree and Roosevelt Wheeler both opted to head back home and chose Louisiana Tech and VCU, respectively, and Sydney Curry is heading to Grand Canyon.

The Orlando, Fla. was a late addition to Louisville's 2022 recruiting class, as he didn't commit to the Cardinals until mid-August due to transcript issues. Basili was an unranked prospect at the time of his commitment to Louisville, and was added mainly due to the program's inability to land several backcourt transfer targets.

Once Basili got to campus, he saw minimal time on the court. He averaged just 8.3 minutes across 17 games played off the bench, tallying only 1.6 points per game on 27.0 percent shooting and 0.6 assists. Despite a lack of guard depth for Louisville, Basili played in the second-fewest game among scholarship players to be with the team for the entire season, ahead of only Ree's 16 games.

A former high school teammate of current Louisville wing Mike James, Basili put up 20.0 points, 4.8 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game in his senior season at Orlando (Fla.) Oak Ridge. He also shot 55 percent from the field and 39 percent on three-point attempts.

The Cardinals went just 4-28 this past season in their first year under head coach Kenny Payne, and the 2023-24 roster will look radically different. Only James, J.J. Traynor, Brandon Huntley-Hatfield and Emmanuel Okorafor are returning for year two under Payne. Hercy Miller is also back, but has been reverted to a walk-on.

Conversely, Payne and his staff are bringing in nine newcomers. They are welcoming transfers Skyy Clark, Tre White and Danilo Jovanovich; 2023 prospects Ty-Laur Johnson, Dennis Evans, Trentyn Flowers, Kaleb Glenn and Curtis Williams Jr.; plus JUCO transfer Koron Davis. According to 247Sports, their high school recruiting class comes in at No. 5 nationally, while their transfer class is 27th.
