Cal Transfer Guard Jayda Curry Commits to Louisville

The guard was the sixth-leading scorer in the Pac-12 this past season.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville women's basketball program has landed their first commitment via the transfer portal since their offseason began.

Jayda Curry, a former guard at Cal, told Bally Sports Network's Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson on Monday that she has committed to the Cardinals. The sophomore entered the portal last month just two days after Selection Sunday, and has two years of eligibility remaining.

"I took my visit, and I enjoyed everything about it," she told Robinson. "The coaching staff, the girls, just the program's history. They have proven success. I'm excited to be on that big stage. ... I'm trying to be that person who can come in there, help and impact them, take them a little farther, get to the Final Four again and hopefully win a national championship."

Cal went just 13-17 overall and 4-14 in Pac-12 play this past season, but it was not due to Curry's efforts. The 5-foot-6 point guard started all 30 of the Golden Bears' games last season, finishing as their leading scorer at 15.5 points per game, which was also good for sixth in the conference.

She also tallied 3.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game, shot 37.9 percent from the field and 33.5 percent on three-point attempts, and was Cal's leader in made threes at 59. Curry was named to Pac-12 Honorable Mention team by the coaches and All-Pac-12 First Team by the media.

The Corona, Calif native burst onto the scene as a freshman at Cal. Starting all 23 games that season, she put up 18.6 points per game in her season to not only lead the Pac-12, but become the first freshman in conference history to lead the Pac-12 in scoring. That also came with 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, along with 38.6/33.6 shooting percentage splits, being named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year as a result.

Head coach Jeff Walz and his staff are having to undergo a massive roster overhaul heading into next season. The program is graduating six seniors in Mykasa Robinson, Chrislyn Carr, Morgan Jones, Liz Dixon, Josie Williams and Norika Konno; and three more players - Payton Verhulst, Jalyn Brown and Zyanna Walker - entered the transfer portal during the season. Currently, Louisville is in line to have just six returners.

With no commitments in their high school Class of 2023, Louisville will have to replace all of their departing players with additions via the transfer portal. Fortunately, Curry is the second transfer to commit to the Cardinals during the academic year, as the program added former Georgia Tech guard Eylia Love to next season's roster back in January.

Louisville went 26-12 overall for the 2022-23 season, experiencing their first double-digit loss season since their 2011-12 campaign. Despite having a "down year" by their typically lofty standards, the Cardinals saved their best basketball for the postseason. They made the ACC Championship game as a No. 4 seed, then clinched their fifth-straight appearance in the Elite Eight before falling to national runner-up Iowa in the NCAA Tournament
