Three Former Cards on 2023 WNBA Opening Day Rosters
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Women's National Basketball Association has officially returned. Eight months after the Las Vegas Aces were able to clinch the 2022 WNBA Finals, the season-opener for the 2023 season is finally here.
With play for the league's 27th season scheduled to begin today, Friday, May 19, three former Louisville women's basketball players are on final 2023 rosters following training camp: guard AD Durr, guard Dana Evans and forward Myisha Hines-Allen.
In the days leading up to the start of the season, four former Cardinals were waived during training camp. The Washington Mystics cut both Jazmine Jones and Emily Engstler, the latter of which had also been waived by the Indiana Fever during training camp, while the Phoenix Mercury cut both Kylie Shook and Liz Dixon.
After missing both the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to a bout with long-haul COVID, Durr finally made their return to the basketball court in 2022. They began the series with the New York Liberty, but struggled to get on-court time, and was dealt to the Atlanta Dream ahead of the trade deadline. After averaging only 1.4 points in 10 games with the Liberty, Durr finished the 2022 season strong and averaged 10.7 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 15 games and two starts with the Dream.
The 2022 season was Evans' first full season with the Chicago Sky after being acquired in a trade with the Dallas Wings as a rookie in 2021. She was a regular off the bench last season, making 33 appearances and one start, averaging 4.3 points and 1.2 assists per game in the process.
Hines-Allen is entering her sixth season with the Washington Mystics. While her overall production has gone done significantly since her breakout 2020 campaign, she was still effective in 2022. Her 8.9 points per game was fourth on the team, her 5.3 rebounds was third, and she also chipped in 1.9 assists across 34 games and 15 starts.
