The guard had previously been the lone 2023 newcomer that had yet to officially move to campus and enroll with the Cardinals.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Last month, Louisville men's basketball head coach Kenny Payne said that while he "felt good" that Ty-Laur Johnson would eventually make it to campus, they were "still waiting on the process to get finished."

Now, at least one aspect of the waiting is complete.

Per the University of Louisville's student database, the Bronx (N.Y.) Our Savior Lutheran guard and Class of 2023 signee has officially enrolled in classes as of Friday, Aug. 18. Out of all of the Cardinals' five incoming freshmen, Johnson had been the last one to officially enroll with the school. The other four (now three following Trentyn Flowers' surprise departure) all enrolled and moved onto campus back in late May.

Johnson enrolled at Louisville with not much time left to do so. The first day of classes for the Fall 2023 semester is this upcoming Monday, and the last day to drop/add classes is next Friday.

With enrollment no longer a question, now it's a waiting game to see if Johnson will be eligible to play the upcoming 2023-24 season in some capacity. A source close to the program tells Louisville Report that a waiver request for Johnson to play for the entire season has been filed to the NCAA. The source was not immediately sure if Johnson would be able to play in the second half of the season should the waiver be denied.

Being able to have Johnson available for the entire season would be a massive boost for the Cardinals. The 6-foot-0, 160-pound point guard is a consensus four-star prospect by the four major recruiting services, and ranks as high as the No. 64 overall prospect in the class according to Rivals.

On top of that, Johnson's addition filled a massive need for Louisville. Prior to his commitment, the only scholarship true point guard currently on the Cardinals' roster was Illinois transfer Skyy Clark. Among other factors, a lack of quality guard depth played a significant role in Louisville going just 4-28 in head coach Kenny Payne's first year at the helm last season.

The 2023-24 roster will look radically different from that of last season's. Seven players entered the transfer portal, with only Mike James, J.J. Traynor, Brandon Huntley-Hatfield and Emmanuel Okorafor being the scholarship returners for year two under Payne. Hercy Miller is also back, but has been reverted to a walk-on.

Payne and his staff are welcoming transfers Skyy Clark, Tre White and Danilo Jovanovich; 2023 prospects Dennis Evans, Kaleb Glenn, Curtis Williams Jr. and Johnson; plus JUCO transfer Koron Davis. According to 247Sports, their high school recruiting class comes in at No. 5 nationally, while their transfer class is 27th.
