Dylan Mesman's Junior Year Highlights: HERE (Hudl)
Frame: Mesman has a solid base frame to work with, and won't need to add too much weight at the next level. He has the height that you want out of a tight end and a good wingspan to boot. He'll need to improve overall muscle tone a bit, but that shouldn't be difficult.
Athleticism: Surprisingly, Mesman has great open field speed for someone of his height, thanks mainly to his long stride. He also moves well for a true tight end, with a healthy balance of agility and strength. Lateral movement and overall foot speed is above average for his position.
Instincts: As previously mentioned, Mesman is the definition of a true tight end, as he performs well in both receiving and blocking. As a pass catcher, he is great at contorting his body to ball on passes meant for where only he can get. He also has a good release off the line of scrimmage, and while he doesn't run a super diverse route tree, his overall route running is good, especially in the flat or in the middle part of the field. Mesman takes hits well, and is always looking to gain an extra yard while going down. He transitions well from blocker to a receiver, delivering quick and effective strikes while not losing a step in his route, whether that be up the middle or to the flats.
Polish: One thing is certain with Mesman, he's not afraid to block when asked to. He's a physical, almost pesky blocker, and he's not going to stop until the play is dead. Unsurprisingly, his best work comes in run blocking, as he will attack defenders head with zero hesitation. He has experience lining up all over offense, whether that be next to the tackle, in the slot, on the boundary or even in the backfield in motion at times. Pass blocking could improve some, as well as his ability to consistently high point the football as a receiver.
Bottom Line: Overall, this is a great pickup for Louisville in their first full recruiting class under head coach Jeff Brohm. Mesman has the potential see the field early to his prowess as both a receiver and blocker, and his skill set translates extremely well to this offensive scheme. A one-two tight end tandem of him and true freshman Jamari Johnson has the potential to be deadly.
