Look: Louisville Installing New Field Turf/Design at L&N Stadium

The turf is being replaced for the first time since 2013, and features a new design.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Earlier this offseason, the Louisville football program began the task of replacing the FieldTurf surface at the newly-named L&N Stadium. UofL unveiled the what the new design of the field will look like earlier this month, and on Thursday, we got our first in-person preview at the new field.

University of Louisville Alumni executive director Matt Willinger was granted a peek at the field, subsequently posting a pair of photos of the midfield "Heisman Cardinal" design to Twitter. WLKY's news chopper also flew overhead to take a look at the installation progress of the new field, which looks to be close to complete.

The turf is being replaced for the first time since 2013, and Louisville expects the installation to be completed "by early June." The old field will be sectioned off and given to season ticket members who have selected that option as part of their benefits for next season.

On top of the addition of the Heisman Cardinal to midfield, the endzones will feature "traditional varsity lettering" that is in the same spirit of the KFC Yum! Center court design that was unveiled in 2019.

Per UofL, the new turf will feature FieldTurf's leading Vertex CORE system. Vertex CORE is designed using FieldTurf's heavyweight 3-layer infill technology, which has showcased a significantly lower incidence of injuries, optimizing performance and safety for student-athletes. Equipped with two legendary FieldTurf fibers, the Classic HD slit-film fiber and the CORE monofilament super fiber, the system delivers leading agility, durability, and esthetics.

The Cardinals finished their 2022 season with an overall mark of 8-5 (4-4 in ACC), including a 24-7 win in the Fenway Bowl over Cincinnati. They'll kick off their 2023 season, which will be their first under new head coach Jeff Brohm, against Georgia Tech in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. on Friday, Sept. 1.
