Louisville DE Ashton Gillotte Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

The community service-based award is presented annually to the top player who excels on the field while also serving others.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville defensive end Ashton Gillotte has been named to the watch list for the 2023 Wuerffell Trophy, the organization announced Thursday.

Gillotte is one of 100 FBS players to be named to the watch list for this year's Wuerfell Trophy, which is presented annually to the top player in college football who is "serving others, while also achieving greatness on the football field and in the classroom." The junior is also one of 15 players from the ACC to make the list.

Gillotte is the third Louisville player to be named to a watch list so far this preseason. Quarterback Jack Plummer made the watch list for the 87th Maxwell Award on Monday, while Bryan Hudson was named to the 2023 Outland Trophy watch list on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound edge rusher is arguably the top Cardinal to return from last season's squad. He logged 7.0 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks, which was good for fifth and third respectively on the team and leads all returners. He also tallied 23 overall tackles (11 solo) plus two fumble recoveries, and was an All-ACC honorable mention.

Louisville finished the 2022 season with an overall mark of 8-5, including 4-4 in the ACC and a 24-7 win in the Fenway Bowl over Cincinnati. The Cardinals will kick off their 2023 season against Georgia Tech in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. on Friday, Sept. 1.
