Jack Plummer Continuing to Stand Out in Fall Camp for Louisville

The graduate transfer quarterback has been one of the Cardinals' top performers over the offseason.
In this story:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - When Jeff Brohm took over as the head coach of the Louisville football program, he and his staff immediately got to work combing the transfer portal. When everything was said and done, the Cardinals wound up with the No. 1 portal class in all of college football, according to On3.

Arguably the most important of Louisville's incoming transfers is Jack Plummer. A graduate transfer quarterback from Cal, Plummer is stepping into a big role for his final year in college, as he is line to take over as the Cardinals' starting quarterback with Malik Cunningham's departure for the NFL.

From the moment Plummer arrived on campus, both his skill set a a quarterback and prior knowledge of Brohm's system immediately stood out in spring ball. With the Cardinals going through fall camp in preparation for their first year of the Brohm era, both his on-field prowess and his leadership are continuing to stand out to the players and coaches.

"Jack's done a really good job," Brohm said. "He's a great leader, he understands our system. He can see the field, he can make all the throws. Just consistency, being able to do that all the time, is the goal. That's really for anybody."

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound signal caller transferred to Cal last offseason after starting his career at Purdue with Brohm, and made the most of his fresh start. Starting all 12 games for the Golden Bears, he completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 3,095 yards, 21 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. His yardage mark was good for sixth-most in Cal history for a single season, and ranked No. 22 in FBS through the end of the regular season.

Prior to his one-year stop in Berkeley, Calif., Plummer spent the first four years of his collegiate career in West Lafayette, Ind. with the Boilermakers. Making 17 total appearances with 13 starts at Purdue, he completed 64.8 percent of his throws for 3,405 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Over the first five years of his collegiate career, Plummer's play style could be best described as a game manager: one who won't lose the game for you, but might not be the reason you win the game either. He more so relied on the skill positions players to make plays.

But during Louisville's open practices in spring ball and fall camp, Plummer has displayed a little bit of "gunslinger" to his game, and hasn't been afraid to push the ball down the field when he has to. Sometimes that has come back to bite him, but conversely, it has sometimes led to him making a ton of plays for the offense.

"Sometimes, third down, third and long, he'll get a little greedy and force a few things," Brohm said of Plummer. "We've got to just be smart. Take our chances, but also get completions, move the chains, don't turn it over, all those things. I think that is something that he just got has to work on. But he can get hot, and he can make a lot of plays. We just got to get him into rhythm, and let him do his thing.

"But he has been a great leader. He's been really good with his teammates, and I think he'll give us everything he's got."

This past Saturday, Louisville ran their first scrimmage of fall camp, giving Brohm and the coaching staff their first major look at the players since the spring game. While plenty of quarterbacks saw action in the nearly 100-play scrimmage, Plummer saw the majority of the snaps, and continued to operate at a high level.

"They all made some plays, but I do think Jack played well," Brohm said. "Like I said, he might have had one or two or three that he may have been a little greedy with, but he played well.

"I really want to build this thing around him so that he can have a great year and we can win some football games, because obviously that makes a quarterback look even better."

Louisville will resume will be back in action to kick off the third week of fall camp on Monday morning. The Cardinals will kick off their 2023 season against Georgia Tech in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. on Friday, Sept. 1.
