LSU Pitcher Garrett Edwards Ruled Out For Season

Edwards underwent surgery last week after suffering an elbow injury against South Carolina in April.

LSU right-handed pitcher Garrett Edwards has been ruled out for the season after suffering a torn UCL, according to The Advocate. A key reliever for the Tigers, Edwards underwent Tommy John surgery last week.

Edwards was in the midst of a career year for the Tigers, posting a 1.93 ERA over 23⅓ innings pitched, proving to be one of Jay Johnson’s best weapons out of the bullpen.

After throwing a changeup, the Tigers’ most effective piece out of the bullpen this season exited the game with the entire LSU fanbase wondering the severity. The next day, Coach Johnson provided an update on Edwards’ status.

"Through a preliminary evaluation with our trainer -- it was about as positive as it could be,” Johnson said. “We're hopeful that it's not serious and that we will have him back soon...I'm not a doctor, never gonna pretend to be a doctor. We'll get them further evaluated when we get home."

Edwards then went through a rigorous evaluation process, and after weeks of meeting with doctors, the best plan of attack was to undergo Tommy John surgery and prepare for his future on the mound.

The Tigers have now seen three pitchers suffer a torn UCL this season with Edwards joining both Grant Taylor, who suffered the injury right before the season was set to start, and Chase Shores who underwent Tommy John surgery last month.

LSU will fall back on Javen Coleman, Gavin Guidry, Nate Ackenhausen and Riley Cooper, among several others, to carry the load out of the bullpen as the season goes on.
