LSU WBB: Meet All-American Transfer Aneesah Morrow
Kim Mulkey is in the midst of one of the greatest recruiting stretches in college basketball history. The transfer portal adds a new element to the offseason, and with a guru like Mulkey at the helm, it gives LSU an advantage in this new era.
The Tigers went out and made a splash after adding All-American forward Aneesah Morrow. The ex-DePaul star gives this program the nation’s No. 2 player in the transfer portal after the Tigers also added Hailey Van Lith, the No. 1 portal player, as well.
Morrow scored over 20 points per game both as a freshman and sophomore. This past season in 2022, she was named a third-team All-American after averaging 25.7 points and 12.2 rebounds per game.
What makes Morrow so special? What can she give LSU this season as they search for back-to-back titles?
A dive into her game and a video detailing her journey to Baton Rouge:
Impressive Scoring Instincts
The film doesn’t lie when you dive into Morrow’s game. She’s the total package and has proven she’s one of the top bucket-getters in the country during his first two years of college.
Morrow is impressive inside whether it be posting up or using her slithery ability to finish around the rim.
A piece of her game that has seen improvement over the last year or so is her midrange game. Morrow has developed a consistent jumper and really taken strides in the right direction from 15-17 feet out.
A consistent free throw line jump shot makes her that much more of a threat offensively alongside LSU star Angel Reese, who continues looking to improve in that area ahead of next season.
Morrow has shown that one of her goals is to become more reliable from three-point range. Only shooting 25% from deep during the 2022-23 season, this is where LSU can help advance her game ahead of her junior campaign.
Rebounding Tenacity
At 6-foot-1, it’s hard to imagine a player snagging over 12 rebounds a night, but after diving into the tape, Morrow is an elite rebounder due to her positioning and intelligence when boxing out.
Like Reese, she has long arms that allow her to go up and reach the ball at its highest point. As she transitions to playing alongside Reese this season, the two can form one of the top rebounding duos in the country.
For Morrow, she won’t have to carry such a high usage rate, but nonetheless, the numbers will still be there.
Another piece that shows for Morrow is her IQ when in transition. We saw Reese’s game grow last season where she’d get a rebound, look up and eventually take the ball up the floor in a point forward like role. For Morrow, it's the same boat. She's smart with the basketball and knows when to push the tempo once grabbing the board.
Significance of the Addition
Morrow fits this program's needs in all aspects. She adds another big to the starting lineup alongside Reese after the departure of LaDazhia Williams and takes the weight off of Reese’s shoulders in the scoring department.
A dynamic scorer, Mulkey now has scoring from all three levels with Morrow signed, sealed and delivered. The Tigers added Van Lith, a superstar point guard who can see her game shine in the pick and roll with Morrow as well.
Van Lith is a player that requires defensive attention. When driving the ball downhill, it’s where Morrow and Reese can shine. The drive and dump off will be something the Tigers see immediate success in with their new “Big 3.”
The overall fit is exceptional. Morrow has seen her usage rate skyrocket during her college career, and now alongside two All-Americans in Van Lith and Reese, it’ll allow her game to open up in several different areas.
