Former LSU CB Laterrance Welch Reveals Transfer Destination

Welch taking his talents out West for the 2024 season, announces where he will suit up next season.

Former LSU cornerback Laterrance Welch will take his talents out West after revealing his Transfer Portal destination on Sunday.

Welch will suit up for Arizona State next season after announcing his intentions to depart Baton Rouge after two years with the program.

A former four-star, Top 150 prospect in the 2022 cycle, Welch is a player with significant upside as he navigates the next chapter of his playing career.

Welch played in 96 snaps on defense this season, according to PFF, while also taking reps with the special teams unit.

For the Tigers, there remains concern surrounding their defensive backfield with a lack of depth moving forward.

As it stands, LSU holds Zy Alexander, Duce Chestnut, Denver Harris, JK Johnson, Sage Ryan, Ashton Stamps, Javien Toviano and Jeremiah Hughes, among others moving forward.

Both Chestnut and Harris did not suit up for the Tigers during the back half of the 2023 season for unspecified reasons while Johnson missed the year after suffering a lower-body injury that required surgery.

Now, with a lack of depth in the cornerback room, it's clear Brian Kelly and Co. will both rely on the youngsters currently on roster while adding a few veterans via the NCAA Transfer Portal as well.

LSU rolled with Toviano and Sage Ryan as the boundary corners through the final weeks of the regular season with both Stamps and Hughes also working into the rotation.

It's a challenging position for this program moving forward. Kelly relied on a trio of true freshmen (Stamps, Toviano and Hughes) to take meaningful snaps while moving Ryan over to the boundary cornerback position.

Now, with the portal officially opening up for business last Monday, LSU will have their work cut out for them with several moving parts coming into the mix.
