LSU Football: QB Jayden Daniels' Status for Florida Matchup Revealed

Brian Kelly opened up on the status of Daniels ahead of Saturday's contest.

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels took a crushing hit to the head on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa after Alabama linebacker Dallas Turner knocked him out of the Week 10 contest.

Now, after a handful of days to work through concussion protocols, Brian Kelly has revealed the status for Daniels on Saturday: He is probable to play and will "most likely suit up".

"He practiced [Thursday] and will most likely pass the protocol. I would say he's probable for Saturday," Kelly said on Thursday.

Brian Kelly and Co. know they have two capable quarterbacks with redshirt sophomore Garrett Nussmeier also taking significant reps during practice this week.

LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy discussed the confidence in Nussmeier if thrown in the fire once again:

“It’s a day to day process,” Lacy said. “If Jayden can go, he’ll go, but if not Nuss can step in and we’re going to roll. I have the same confidence in Nuss as I do in Jayden. If Jayden can’t go I know he’s going to be there for Nuss.”

On Saturday at Alabama, Nussmeier was put in the game after Daniels was knocked out due to injury. It was a challenging situation with LSU down 14 in the fourth quarter, but offensive lineman Garrett Dellinger praised the youngster.

“There was no easing him into it,” Dellinger said. “It’s hard to ease someone into the fourth quarter down two touchdowns type of drive, but we just had to keep doing what we’ve been doing and so it feels like practice for him. I’d say that’s the easiest way to get him going, is doing what he’s comfortable with.

“We practice with both of them, so practice is like how the game was. One play Jayden is in, then they’ll put Nuss in for a few reps and nothing changes for us. They call the same plays."

What's Next for Daniels?

After Kelly hopped on the SEC teleconference on Wednesday to discuss the status of Daniels, he stated that his quarterback worked out with the team before going through contact drills on Thursday.

Now, after going through non-contact work on Wednesday and contact on Thursday, Daniels is continuing to jump each hurdle necessary.

As it stands, Daniels is trending in the right direction and will "most likely" suit up in Tiger Stadium against Florida.
