LSU Football: Three Sleepers to Monitor in 2023
Brian Kelly and his coaching staff went out and secured several high-profile newcomers from both the Transfer Portal and high school ranks, adding depth to this roster for the long haul, but there are a few sleepers prepared to make some noise.
LSU’s 2023 roster has a variety of impact players, but who are a few guys not receiving as much attention as the rest?
Here are three sleepers heading into preseason camp:
Matthew Langlois - Safety
Langlois enters the 2023 season healthy after suffering injuries in back-to-back seasons with the Tigers. A safety who came to Baton Rouge as a four-star prospect in the 2021 class, it’s been a slow start to his career with LSU, but looking ahead, he could take on a major role when called upon.
The safety position is locked down with Greg Brooks and Major Burns returning to Death Valley. Aside from the pair of veterans, who’s next? That would be transfer addition Andre Sam and Langlois. Both players will be battling for reps during fall camp and have the chance to see the field in an advanced capacity in 2023. Look for Langlois to take that next step and impress soon.
Kyle Parker - Wide Receiver
It’s difficult to call a freshman wide receiver a “sleeper,” but Kyle Parker is a name LSU fans should get familiar with sooner rather than later. The Texas native was a force at the high school level, elevating his status to a four-star ranking against top-level talent, but now he’s prepared to compete against SEC talent.
Parker joins a talented wide receiver room alongside freshmen Shelton Sampson Jr. and Jalen Brown, but Parker is certainly a name to remember. A physical speedster, the coveted wideout has the chance to make an impact sooner rather than later.
Another part of Parker’s game that will be lethal is his ability to shine as a return specialist. This is where his speed enters the picture. A vertical threat as a receiver, it also carries into what he can do on special teams as a receiver. Look for Parker to make an impact in one way or another.
Laterrance Welch - Cornerback
The LSU secondary returned less than a handful of players, but Laterrance Welch is one of them. In his freshman campaign, Welch didn’t see the field much, but as he transitions into his second season with the program, he looks poised to take that next step.
The Tigers reeled in a handful of critical pieces to the secondary this offseason, but Welch remains a player LSU is high on. Welch looked the part during the spring game in April, and as we enter preseason practice, he has the chance to solidify his status as a guy ready to wake people up.
