LSU Football: The Standouts From LSU's Spring Game, Youngsters Shine in Tiger Stadium
LSU handled business in Tiger Stadium on Saturday with the program wrapping up Spring Camp with their annual scrimmage.
The short Spring Game gave Brian Kelly and his staff the opportunity to evaluate the roster, position battles and more, but also let the youngsters get more reps under their belt in an "in-game" situation.
Early-enrollee Gabriel Reliford shined for the LSU defense and certainly proved he belongs in the purple and gold, but who else made an impact?
The Standouts From Saturday:
Gabriel Reliford: Early-Enrollee Defensive Lineman
The glaring takeaway from Saturday's spring game was the impressive performance from early-enrollee defensive lineman Gabriel Reliford. The youngster shined with the second-team, and although he didn't face LSU's first-team tackles in Will Campbell and Emery Jones, it was a big-time showing for him.
Reliford ended the day with a pair of sacks and several quarterback hurries for the LSU defense and proved he can be a key piece to this defense as an EDGE this fall. This offseason, Reliford was a guy who had question marks on whether he'd be an interior piece of defensive end, and it's now clear where he belongs: rushing the passer on the outside. The speed an twitchiness spoke for itself.
CJ Daniels: Liberty Transfer Wide Receiver
Redshirt junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will handle QB1 duties this fall with an embarrassment of riches in his arsenal, including Liberty transfer wide receiver CJ Daniels. The first-year Tiger flaunted his elite playmaking ability, route-running and more on Saturday. A player who has been rolling with the second-team, he'll be a starter by the fall alongside Kyren Lacy.
Lacy looked the part, Aaron Anderson showed his speed and Shelton Sampson Jr. was certainly targeted a few times. Nussmeier will be able to pick and choose who he wants on Saturdays. It'll be interesting to see what LSU does with Chris Hilton Jr. He had an eye-opening drop during the Spring Game and it'll be of significant intrigue to see if he's rolling with the 1's during Fall Camp in August.
Kylin Jackson: Redshirt Freshman Safety
Reliford will be a name talked about after his showing on Saturday in Death Valley, but second-year Tiger Kylin Jackson proved he will be an impactful player this season. After redshirting in Year 1 with the program, he looks poised for a breakout season in the purple and gold if given adequate snaps.
Jackson was a ballhawk on Saturday and showed he can battle for reps behind Major Burns at the STAR position. He got it done with the second team and was extremely impressive. It'll be intriguing to watch his development over the offseason.
Rickie Collins: Redshirt Freshman Quarterback
Collins took the lead in the race for QB2 on Saturday after showcasing his elite athleticism with the second-team. Once Nussmeier wrapped up his day, Collins also earned the chance to take snaps with the first-team.
Collins has been battling it out with Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann for the backup signal-caller duties, but Collins certainly took the lead on Saturday. Swann missed several throws and didn't look as comfortable in the pocket, which was surprising from a player who has started games in the SEC.
Now, Collins takes the lead into summer with the battle likely extending all the way until Fall Camp in August.
