The LSU Availability Report: The Latest on Zy Alexander and Denver Harris
Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers continue working through their open date as this program looks to get healthy for the Alabama showdown next Saturday in Tuscaloosa.
The matchup on Nov. 4 will have significant intrigue as both programs look to keep their hopes alive to claim the SEC West.
For LSU, there are concerns surrounding the status of a pair of starters along with cornerback depth.
Kelly addressed the media on Tuesday where he dove into into where things stand with four players.
The LSU "Availability Report":
Injured: Zy Alexander Mekhi Wingo
The Tigers saw their No. 1 cornerback in Zy Alexander exit Saturday’s contest against Army with an ankle injury. The fluke incident occurred on the final play of the first half where Alexander was seen receiving help off of the field. The Southeastern Louisiana transfer didn’t return for the rest of the game.
What’s Alexander’s current status? Kelly addressed the media on Tuesday where he stated that his top cornerback will “miss some time” and isn’t practicing at the moment. He will be reevaluated in the coming weeks.
For Mekhi Wingo, he's been dealing with a lower body injury throughout the season. The Tigers' starting defensive tackle took the Army matchup to rest up, but the chance he misses the Alabama contest comes as a surprise.
Kelly also stated that Wingo will "miss some time" as he nurses an injury and his status remains up in the air.
Inactive: Denver Harris and Duce Chestnut
LSU brought in four transfers during the offseason: Alexander, Johnson, Harris and Chestnut. All four are now either inactive or injured.
For Harris, it’s been a week-by-week rollercoaster regarding his status. Will he be available or will he be inactive? On Saturday against Army, the Texas A&M transfer wasn’t on the sidelines with the program and is currently not practicing with the team. Kelly stated Harris “remains on scholarship” but isn’t with the team at the moment.
When it comes to Syracuse transfer Duce Chestnut, he remains away from the LSU program as well and is not practicing with the team. Per Kelly, Chestnut “remains on scholarship” but “is not practicing” at the moment. Chestnut has been away from the team for weeks and his status moving forward is up in the air.
“All I can tell you is they’re on scholarship, they’re enrolled in school but right now they’re not participating," Kelly said. "They’re still in the program, they’re still in good standing but not able to play right now. We’ll see what happens down the road."
