The LSU Football Practice Report: Notes From Tuesday's Spring Practice
The final week of LSU Spring Camp is underway with the Bayou Bengals returning to the practice field on Tuesday.
Brian Kelly's program will have one more practice on Thursday before Saturday's Spring Game at 1 p.m. CT in Tiger Stadium.
Here are the notes from Tuesday's brief 20-minute viewing from the Charles McClendon Practice Facility:
The Quarterbacks
- Garrett Nussmeier's continuity with Josh Williams has been key here. We've seen several different run options with the pair of veterans clicking during practice. On Tuesday, we saw offensive coordinator Joe Sloan and running backs coach Frank Wilson working side-by-side with this offense dialed in with the run game. Nussmeier looks crisp in position drills and is taking a "lead by example" approach at times.
- Rickie Collins handled QB2 reps on Tuesday with AJ Swann following. The two signal-callers will continue battling it out this offseason for the backup spot. For Collins, he certainly has the advantage as it stands given he already has a year in the system, but as Swann gets a better feel for the scheme, his chances of earning the QB2 role will grow. They continue splitting reps during camp with Collins getting the first opportunities on Tuesday.
- It's important to mention early-enrollee Colin Hurley when talking about the quarterbacks. Despite arriving in Baton Rouge at just 16 years old, and just turning 17 years of age, he plays above his age. Hurley has impressed those in attendance with his crisp throwing motion and advanced IQ.
The Running Backs
- There isn't much to report from Tuesday's practice with the running backs. As reported through all of camp, it's Josh Williams taking first team reps with Kaleb Jackson earning starting reps as well while the only two scholarship backs navigate a more involved rushing attack.
- For Jackson, there is no reason why he can't be LSU's go-to guy this year in Baton Rouge. He's advancing well with those within the program impressed.
The Wide Receivers
- Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton and Aaron Anderson were once again the first team wide receivers for LSU on Tuesday with Kyle Parker, CJ Daniels and Zavion Thomas working in as well.
- The Tigers will utilize five or six receivers on Saturday's this fall. Despite Lacy, Hilton and Anderson working with the one's, wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton will use his embarrassment of riches routinely. Expect Thomas, Daniels and Parker to remain a key piece to the rotation.
- Many have asked about Liberty transfer CJ Daniels, and as he continues learning the scheme, he'll be in a better spot. Daniels and Mississippi State transfer Zavion Thomas are key components to this offense and it showed with their significant reps on Tuesday.
The Offensive Line
- First team offensive line: LT Will Campbell, LG Garrett Dellinger, C DJ Chester, RG Miles Frazier, RT Emery Jones
- Second team offensive line: LT Tyree Adams (R-Fr.), LG Paul Mubenga (R-Fr.), C Coen Echols (Fr.), RG Christian Stamps (R-Fr.), RT Bo Bordelon (R-Soph.)
- Tyree Adams and Bo Bordelon have been impressive during camp and had another good day on Tuesday.
The Defensive Line
- Jacobian Guillory is a key component on the inside for Bo Davis and his defensive line group. The interior depth is limited but Guillory has been key. We've also seen offensive lineman turned defensive lineman, Kimo Makaneole, work with the first team.
- Jalen Lee and Makaneole are working for the other first team interior slot alongside Guillory, but this program wil be adding two or three more interior defensive linemen during the spring portal window.
- Bradyn Swinson and Sai'vion Jones were the first team EDGE rushers with former five-star Dashawn Womack taking strides in the right direction. He's earning key snaps as well.
The Linebackers
- There isn't much to report here once again. Harold Perkins looks crisp and has been vocal during camp with nothing changing on Tuesday. Perkins and Greg Penn III will be LSU's starters this fall at the second level.
The Cornerbacks
- Early enrollee PJ Woodland's meteoric rise continues after taking first team reps once again at cornerback. On the opposite side, it's Ashton Stamps running with the first team.
- Sophomore cornerback Javien Toviano took reps with the second team once again with Jeremiah Hughes, Jyaire Brown and JK Johnson also working in.
The Safeties
- Sage Ryan, Jardin Gilbert and Major Burns (STAR position) were the first team safeties on Tuesday once again.
- We saw redshirt freshman Ryan Yaites also work in with the STARs as he battles for significant snaps this season.
- The starting secondary has remained the same for the last two-to-three practices with the cornerbacks sitting at PJ Woodland and Ashton Stamps. The safeties of Ryan, Gilbert and Burns remain the same on Tuesday as well.
