Cowan dominates as No. 15 Terrapins win 82-72 over No.18 Hawkeyes
The Terrapins (17-4) defeated the Hawkeyes (15-6) on Thursday night as they extend their undefeated record at home to 12-0 at the Xfinity Center. Anthony Cowan led Maryland with a career-high 31 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
It was a very tight first half for both teams as they swung back and forth with the lead. As expected, Luka Garza and Joe Wieskamp had productive days scoring 21 and 17 points respectively. Their efforts along with the strong combination of Cowan and Jalen Smith made the first half exciting in College Park.
Smith finished the night with a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. That would be his 12th double-double of the season through 21 games.
Despite impressive scoring performances from the Terrapins' players, they reverted back to their struggles from behind the arc. They made only 7-25 (.280) compared to the 40.2 3-point percentage in the previous two games.
Although their struggles from downtown is a big issue, the Terrapins made 45.6 percent of their field goal attempts in the revenge game against Iowa. Maryland pulled away in the second half, outscoring Iowa in both halves.
The Xfinity Center was loud, with the audience chanting "MVP" to Cowan on a career night for him.
As Maryland put an end to Iowa's five-game win streak, the Terrapins extend their own win streak to four. The Terrapins improve their conference record to 7-3 as the Hawkeyes fall 6-4.
Next up, they will host the No. 25 Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Tuesday, February 4th at the Xfinity Center.
