Sanogo Leads UConn Past Miami 72-59
It was a great run for the Miami Hurricanes as they made it to the Final Four but could not surpass the UConn Huskies, losing 72-59.
The key player was Adama Sanogo. He was dominant throughout the game and finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He even hit two 3-point shots early on to help give UConn a 9-0 lead.
It was just shocking how much he won the battle in the paint over Miami big man Norchad Omier, especially during the first half.
After the Huskies got up early, Miami did battle back to make it 19-19 with 8:23 to play in the half. After that, the Hurricanes just could not hit enough shots. It was incredible just how bad the shooting was.
By halftime, Miami was 9 for 36 for 25%, while UConn was 14 of 28 for 50%. Also, the Huskies had knocked down 3-point looks and Miami had not. UConn drilled 6 of 13 from deep; that was the biggest difference going into intermission.
The second half was better but not enough to make up for the first half. UConn led 46-26 before Nijel Pack scored a layup to get it back under a 20 point lead. The Huskies were quicker to the ball, looked far more comfortable in their offensive sets, and Miami just struggled to make shots.
As an interesting shooting note, CBS announcer Jim Nantz mentioned The U missed 12 layups. There was still 7 minutes to play in the game when he said that. Just wasn't UM's night shooting the ball.
Miami did make a run, finally.
But when Alex Karaban drove into the lane and knocked down a mid-range jumper for 2, it took the momentum the other way once again. With 3:57 to play, UConn was up 66-54 and in control.
Miami tried pressing, fouling, but it simply was not enough. UConn moved on to play San Diego State in the national title game.
For Miami, the leading scorer was Isaiah Wong with 15 while Jordan Miller scored 11. As a parting note, the following could not be more true:
