Notes and Trends
In Duke’s most recent match-up against their rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Blue Devils were led by Roach, who finished with 20 points in their 63-57 victory. Top freshman recruit, Derrick Lively II, contributed in a major way by setting a career high in minutes (34), rebounds (14), and blocks (eight).
Although Lively II has struggled acclimating to the collegiate game, the 7-footer’s presence was felt in the anticipated match-up against Carolina’s star forward, Armando Bacot.
Duke has now won four of their last five games and is currently on a three-game winning streak heading into Monday night's contest in Coral Gables. One of those wins came at Cameron Indoor against the Hurricanes (68-66).
This game was highlighted by Roach’s return to the lineup after missing a couple of weeks to a toe injury. The junior contributed by scoring 14 points, dishing 4 assists, and bringing much needed leadership to the floor for the young Blue Devils squad in a wire-to-wire matchup.
Wong’s quiet afternoon at Duke stood out in the box score to Canes fans (2-8 from the floor), as the Blue Devils set out to make other guys beat them. That was part of the reason Miami struggled as a unit from the field, shooting only 35%. Nigel Pack and Miller’s three-point shooting gave the Canes a chance as they scored 18 and 19 points respectively.
Once again, the Blue Devils will be without forward, and usual starter, Dariq Whitehead. Whitehead has not seen the floor since injuring his left leg in the loss to Virginia Tech on Jan. 23. Whitehead scored 10 points (3-9 from the field) against Miami in what would be his most recent full contest.
Miami looks to extend their win streak to three following a win Saturday against #20 Clemson on the road, and a convincing home win against a Hokies team at full strength.
Each of Miami’s last three losses in Atlantic Coast Conference play, it was on the road and by one possession. Not to mention, the losses were at the hands of three of the more formidable resumes in the ACC (NC State, Duke, and Pittsburgh).
A win for the Canes tonight would put them within a half game of Clemson in the ACC, and strengthens the argument that they are the best team in the conference. Now for the prediction.
