Miami Hurricanes Basketball Player Breakdown: Norchad Omier
As we look forward towards the 2023-24 basketball season for the Miami Hurricanes, the storyline remains who can step up or improve in the absence of Isaiah Wong and Jordan Miller. Despite testing the waters, Norchad Omier returns to the Hurricanes after establishing himself as one of the most physical players in all of college basketball.
2022-23 Season Stats:
13.1 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 1.1 BPG, 57.4% FG
Storyline for the Season:
In Omier's second season with the Hurricanes, the focus will be if Omier can truly develop a consistent jumper to stretch the floor for Miami. Omier could be that stretch-four the Canes need.
He returns to Coral Gables with the knowledge of hitting four of five threes in the month of February. The expectation shouldn't be a high volume shooter, but a player that can shoot 34% of higher from low volume.
Miami understands that Omier wouldn't stretch the floor like Sam Waardenburg did, but Omier has flashes of talent there. He still possesses tremendous rebounding capabilities; a jump shot would put Omier in a top tier class of big.
Expectations for Next Season:
Statistically next season, Omier should take a slight increase in points per game and could even get to around 15 per game. In terms of rebounding, it could only take a slight drop if Matthew Cleveland continues to improve. The steals and blocks should be similar as well, but it's too soon to predict the shooting percentages as it's unknown how much of a "green light" Coach Jim Larrañaga gives Omier.
Prediction: Omier establishes himself in the top tier of ACC "bigs" with Kyle Filipowski of Duke and Armando Bacot of North Carolina, while growing his offensive game to the 14-15 points per game range. Expect for him to enter his name into the draft following the 2023-24 season.
