When the Miami Hurricanes take on the Texas Longhorns, it’s a chance for one of the two teams to reach the NCAA Final 4.
Miami has won 8 of their last 10 and Texas has also won the same. The ACC versus Big 12 matchup has some intriguing storylines to touch upon before going into the game details and betting odds.
For one, Miami just ran past Houston 89-75. The Cougars were thought to be one of the top overall teams in the NCAA Tournament. At points of the contest, the Hurricanes actually made it look rather easy against the Cougars.
Miami’s passing and ball handling were far superior to Houston’s defense. Those areas helped Miami shoot 51.7% from the field, as well as 44% from behind the 3-point line.
All five of Miami's starters, including ACC Player of the Year Isaiah Wong, scored in double digits.
That overall Miami performance was not expected by many of the sports books across the country prior to the game, as Houston was favored by 7 to 7.5 points, depending on the odds maker in question.
Of particular note, Miami guard Nijel Pack scored 26 points while hitting 7 of 10 from behind the arc and also adding 3 assists. Beginning with the Feb. 4 Miami 78-74 victory at Clemson, Pack has reached or surpassed 20 points six times.
He’s averaged 16.2 points per contest during those 12 games that started against the Tigers, and 13.8 points per contest for the season. For Texas, its 83-71 win over Xavier was also impressive.
Due to the injury to Dylan Disu, coming off the bench and scoring 18 points for Texas was senior forward Christian Bishop. He’s a player that does much of his work inside of 15 feet, and he’s athletic enough to score in different ways around the basket.
Texas guards Tyrese Hunter and Marcus Carr combined for 37 points against the Musketeers, and they drilled 5 of their 6 shots from downtown.
Plus shot-fake specialist Sir’Jabari Rice drained 16 points for the Longhorns, too.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was Texas still doing well on the boards without Disu in the lineup, only losing 36-32 on the backboards. Overall, Texas has been a really good squad down the stretch and into the NCAA Tournament.
Here are the details for the Elite 8 matchup between the Canes and ‘Horns.
