The National Football League can be a harsh business.

In the case of former Miami Hurricane Calais Campbell, it's hard to fathom releasing the future NFL Hall of Fame product. With roster moves needed for salary cap reasons, as well as creating cap space for the upcoming NFL Draft, that just happened, however.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta did made a great point from the team's post on Twitter.

"While this is the worst part of the business, we have not closed the door on the possibility of him returning to our team in the future."

Campbell has been a dominant player on the gridiron, having registered 809 tackles and 99 sacks during his professional career. He's going to eventually end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for those numbers alone. Campbell has been well respected off the gridiron, too.

He earned the 2022 Art Rooney Award for sportsmanship on the field, and also a commentator for the players-only NFL combine back on March 2. In short, Campbell has been and continues to be one of the most respected players in all of professional sport.

All Hurricanes will continue to track Campbell's contract situation, as he could certainly still play in the NFL this next fall.

At some point down the line, do not be surprised if the former Hurricane ends up in coaching and/or being a part of a NFL front office management position. Either of which would be areas Campbell would do very well.
