Breaking Down Cam Ward's Strengths And How Miami Will Adapt Their Offense | Donno Podcast

How will Miami OC Shannon Dawson adapt his offense to his new quarterback?
In this story:

Cam Ward is betting on himself by opting to play another season in college rather than enter the 2024 NFL Draft. Not only that, but he's betting on Miami and offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson to help him raise his stock.

According to Gary Ferman and Matt Shodell at CaneSport On3, Miami will adjust their offense to incorporate more pro style concepts. Shodell noted that it won't be a complete change but more of an adaptation. "They will be out of shotgun a lot with a bit more under center and a lot of pro style concepts," Schodell wrote.

This could help Miami maximize Ward's skillset while also helping him prepare for the NFL. Ward will likely have better protection and more of a running game to lean on than he had at Washington State.

I had a great conversation with Stevo from 365 Canes Football and Rivals on my Locked On Canes podcast. Stevo specializes in film breakdowns and analysis. He has studied Ward extensively.

On Ward's greatest strengths, Stevo first brought up his ball placement. "He's probably the best 50-50 ball thrower that I've seen in a while."He has a good, strong arm." According to Stevo (and I certainly agree,) Ward's "it factor" comes from his ability to break containment and extend plays.

The only potential concern from Ward comes from his fumbling. He had 14 fumbles in 2023. "That screams, we have to focus on ball security," Stevo said. He noted that Miami's offensive line can help Ward, but "cutting back on hero ball and being able to lean on the running game" will be even bigger factors for Ward to reduce his fumbles at Miami.
