How High Is The Ceiling For Miami Hurricanes Freshman QB Emory Williams?

Williams showed poise and talent in his first career start last week. This is only the beginning.

The Miami Hurricanes are expected to get starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke back from injury this week, but in the event he cannot play, it's nice to know that true freshman backup Emory Williams is capable of leading the team to victory. He really stepped up against Clemson, especially in the fourth quarter, en route to Miami's 28-20 double overtime win.

Williams' recruitment in high school was relatively quiet, since he comes from an under-scouted area in the Florida Panhandle. My long-time friend and mentor, Larry Blusten, was one of the few paying attention to Williams and Milton High School even before Emory committed to Miami.

On my Locked On Canes podcast, I sat down with Blustein to break down Emory's performance against Clemson. We discussed how high Williams' ceiling truly is.

"He's matured quite a bit in the last year or so," Blustein said. "In the first half last week, he was a little timid and wasn't getting a lot of help. After the second half began and Miami started running the ball, things got easier for Emory. He started spotting guys, had a little more time, and got confidence from the sideline from coaches and from Van Dyke."

The experience of facing Clemson's top ten defense will go a long way.

"Emory has such a high ceiling because he's physical, he's 6-4, he throws the ball around. He just has to have experience in reading defenses."

I know I'm not the first person to say this, but Williams reminds me of a young Ken Dorsey. He has a similar stature and personality.

"I think that's a good comparison with Dorsey," Blustein said. "He's not gonna crush you with his speed but he's got that size and an ability to find (his receivers). His ceiling is just amazing."
