The Miami Hurricanes held their first practice of fall camp 2023 on Tuesday. I was in the building for the 45 minutes of media viewing.

I offered an extensive recap on my Locked On Canes podcast.

Transfer cornerback Jadais Richard was my top day one standout. This was my first in-person look at the former Vanderbilt Commodore, who arrived at Miami after spring football.

Richard looks and plays long with his 6-2, 200 lb frame.

Near the end of media viewing, he batted down a pass from Emory Williams. Two plays later, he intercepted Tyler Van Dyke. He jumped a route beautifully. From where I stood, it looked more like a great play by the DB than a mistake by the quarterback.

I was impressed with sophomore tight end Elijah Arroyo. He missed most of last season with an ACL injury but appears 110 percent recovered. Arroyo is a smooth route runner with excellent hands. In one drill, backup quarterback Jacurri Brown threaded a needle to Elijah and he made a great, contested catch.

All three scholarship quarterbacks had their ups and downs during drills. Van Dyke appears to be the most accurate of the group. Brown continues to improve his passing, though. He's one of the most physically imposing players on the roster.  Williams, the true freshman, has the most natural-looking footwork.

Star safeties Kam Kinchens and James Williams are always enjoyable to watch in practice. Williams was limited in spring from a shoulder injury, but looks fully fit now.

I had a good view of wide receivers coach Kevin Beard and tight ends coach Cody Woodiel. They each have a unique knack for communicating quickly and demonstrating techniques. Beard, especially, is entertaining to watch. He never asks a player to run a route or make a move that he can't do himself.
