When I saw a 6 foot 5 giant in a red non-contact jersey standing next to a group of Miami Hurricanes safeties, I couldn't help but smile.

James Williams is back!

This is the first time we've seen the junior safety on the field this spring. Williams had a procedure on his left shoulder after the conclusion of the 2022 season. If you look at the photo above, you can see him wearing some sort of brace on the arm.

Williams had an up and down sophomore campaign but did manage to lead the team with 39 solo tackles. Williams and All-American Kam Kinchens are projected to be Miami's starting safety duo again this season.

In the portion of practice that was open to the media, we could see the defensive backs working individual drills.

Throughout the spring, I have enjoyed watching redshirt freshman safety Markeith Williams. He, along with Brian Balom and true freshman Kaleb Spencer, will provide important depth behind James Williams and Kinchens.

In the video above, the coach you see in green is defensive coordinator Lance Guidry. He's a former safeties coach and does a lot of work with that unit.

On offense, I noticed wide receiver Colbie Young wearing a non-contact jersey. He was moving around fine, so he probably picked up a minor knock in the scrimmage on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Isaiah Horton was lined up with the first-team in Young's place.

I watched starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke go through his accuracy drills today and he looked sharp. On ball-placement drills on deep throws, I saw him connect nicely on a throw to the sideline to early enrollee tight end Riley Williams

One of the most consistent performers in practice is slot receiver Xavier Restrepo. He catches everything thrown his way and leads by example with the other wideouts.

The Hurricanes will return to the practice field this Thursday, April 6th. Miami's spring game will take place on Friday, April 14th from DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
