On the eve of Miami Hurricanes fall camp, I caught up with offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and wide receivers coach Kevin Beard.

The Hurricanes have acquired important new weapons in the transfer portal. What role will wide receivers Tyler Harrell and Shemar Kirk and running back Ajay Allen play this season?

According to Beard, Harrell is "as fast as they're say he is. He is crazy fast." Harrell has been clocked running the 40 yard dash at a blazing 4.2 seconds.

On Shemar Kirk: "He's a YAC guy," Beard said. "Once he gets the ball in his hands he's a running back. He has really good quickness. He has really good vision. He doesn't lack confidence one bit. He believes in himself and has worked very hard to get where he is right now."

"They've picked up on everything very quickly," Dawson said. "I'm excited to see those guys in camp." Harrell, Kirk and Allen all arrived after spring football, so Dawson has not had the opportunity to coach them in person just yet.

Dawson informed us that he will be calling plays from the field, not the booth. He's also the quarterbacks coach and emphasized that it's very important to him to talk to the QBs between plays.

According to Dawson, starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke has "an extremely high football IQ," saying, "there are things I can do with him at this point that you typically can't do with quarterbacks in their first year (in a new offense.)"
