The Miami Hurricanes have established themselves as one of the nation’s top offensive units. It’s been an incredible turnaround after last season’s ineptitude.

Through three games, they scored 38 versus Miami of Ohio, 41 versus Texas A&M (7 more via Brashard Smith’s kickoff return for a score and subsequent point after by Andre Borregales), and another 48 versus Bethune-Cookman.

Those impressive totals came from several Canes offensive weapons and a powerful offensive line. Here’s a breakdown of how it’s happened.

Note: Miami has played three games and most other FBS teams have finished two games thus far.

  • Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke has been consistent and also Mr. Big Play. He’s gone 57 of 75, 76%, 822 yards, 11 yards per attempt, 8 touchdowns, and only 1 interception.
  • Did you know? Eight of Miami’s touchdowns have been plays of 20 or more yards.
  • All five of the Miami running backs have averaged 5.3 yards per carry or more. Additionally, each one of those five Canes runners has found the end zone this season.
  • Miami has also established a strong running game with 21 runs of 10 or more yards, good for the #1 spot in all of college football.
  • The leader for the Hurricanes in yards per reception has been Xavier Restrepo. He’s accumulated 17 receptions for 314 yards and a whopping 18.5 yards per catch average.
  • Another key statistical note, Miami is #4 with 17 passing plays of 20 or more yards.
  • As for touchdowns, the Miami receiving corps has seen Jacolby George score four touchdowns. That total has led all Hurricanes at wide receiver, running back or tight end.
  • A primary reason for Miami having created so many great individual statistics would be how the team – as a true unit – has created a 52% success rate on third downs.
  • Looking at the Canes’ per game national averages, they have generated 511 yards (#14), 189 yards on the ground (#44), and 322 yards through the air (#15).

It’s been clear that the 2023 Miami offense has taken a huge leap forward. A balanced attack that has created mismatches at the line of scrimmage, and with its plethora of receiving threats, this Hurricanes offensive unit has been one of the nation’s best.
