How Will The Miami Hurricanes Handle Their Quarterback Situation For Next Year? | Opinion
The Miami Hurricanes have started four different quarterbacks over the past two seasons. Continuity and stability have been lacking. In 2022 it was Tyler Van Dyke, Jake Garcia, and Jacurri Brown. This year, it's been Van Dyke, Emory Williams, and then back to Van Dyke after Williams suffered a season ending injury.
Garcia transferred to Mizzou after last season. Brown is still with the program but hasn't taken a snap this year. He's red-shirting but could play in up to four games without burning the redshirt. Van Dyke's inconsistencies have many suspecting that he might transfer away from Miami at the end of the year. Others wonder if Brown will be back.
There could be a scenario where Williams and incoming 2024 freshman Judd Anderson will be the only two quarterbacks on scholarship by January.
I took some time this week on my Locked On Canes podcast to share my vision for next year's quarterback room.
I believe Emory Williams has a very bright future at Miami. I disagree with those who say he isn't starting quarterback material based on his poor completion percentage (8 for 23) against Florida State. Remember, this is a first year quarterback who happened to be facing the toughest opponent on Miami's schedule on the road. Williams has the poise and toughness needed to play the position at a high level. He just needs time to develop.
Emory's time will come, but I would not be ready to just hand him the starting job in 2024. Miami has built an elite defense and offensive line. This team should not be viewed as a continuing rebuild next season, but as a team that should be ready to compete for a conference championship or more.
At times this year, it's appeared that the Hurricanes are an elite quarterback away from being able to beat anyone on their schedule. For that reason, I believe Miami needs to aggressively pursue a veteran starter in the transfer portal. This team needs a known commodity under center. In a perfect world, you find someone who can captain the ship for a year or two while mentoring players like Williams, Anderson, and 2025 verbal commit Luke Nickel.
If you bring someone in and Williams beats him out, GREAT. I am all for competition and iron sharpening iron.
I would also love it if Jacurri Brown stays at Miami. He's spent this season working on his fundamentals.
If Miami dips into the portal, who might be available? Veteran Tulane starter Michael Pratt is reportedly interested in transferring to a Power Five program next year.
With Jimbo Fisher getting fired at Texas A&M, we'll keep our eyes on Conner Weigman. He seems like the ideal dual threat QB to thrive in Shannon Dawson's offense.
A log jam at quarterback in Texas has many wondering if Maalik Murphy will hit the portal. If you really want to dream big, you have to wonder if Arch Manning could leave Austin. This seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened.
Georgia has highly touted quarterbacks like Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton stuck behind Carson Beck.
It's hard to predict which of these names or any others who might bolt in the portal, but recent offseasons have shown us to expect multiple signal callers to become available.
Last year, Miami stayed away from portal quarterbacks because they committed to building their offense around Van Dyke. Will they shoot their shot this time around?
