Miami Hurricanes Safety James Williams Breaks Down Expanded Role Under Lance Guidry
James Williams is a unicorn. Miami's third year playmaker has enough speed and range to play safety, but he's build like a linebacker at 6-3, 223 pounds.
New defensive coordinator Lance Guidry plans to use Williams in numerous different ways, including lining up occasionally at outside linebacker.
"I can do anything (Guidry) asks me to do. Whatever he asks me to do, whatever he wants, I'm willing to do it all. I'm ready to help the team win," Williams said.
On the possibility of seeing more reps at outside linebacker, Williams said he wasn't surprised when Guidry presented him with the idea.
"I kind of knew it was coming. I wasn't scared or anything like that. I already know. I know what the future holds for me and my body and how much I'm gonna keep growing and keep getting bigger."
When asked if he likes his new role, Williams smiled and said, "I love my role. I'm gonna do it all. I'm gonna move around and be me."
"I feel comfortable wherever I go," Williams added.
Williams and fellow safety Kam Kinchens were co-leaders in total tackles last season at 59 apiece.
Williams played through a shoulder injury for much of last year. He went under the knife shortly after the season, but is practicing now with zero restrictions. Williams says he is 100-percent recovered, feels great, and feels like he never had surgery.
