"Rueben Bain's Motor Is Unbelievable" | Former Miami DB Tolbert Bain Breaks Down Freshman Phenom Cousin
Miami Hurricanes freshman defensive lineman Rueben Bain grades out as a top six lineman in the entire country through seven games, per Pro Football Focus. He's turned heads with his 19 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 5.0 TFL. He just recorded a team high 8 tackles with 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss and a forced fumble in Miami's win against Clemson.
Rueben's older cousin, Tolbert Bain, isn't surprised by his early success.
The former Miami defensive back and national champion joined me on my Tuesday episode of Locked On Canes.
"His motor is unbelievable," Tolbert said. "It's so scary (for opposing offenses) to see."
He sees some Warren Sapp in Rueben, but noted Sapp did it more with his speed while Rueben does it more with his strength.
Tolbert used to drive Rueben and other cousins of his down to Coral Gables during the Mark Richt era, when Richt hosted youth camps at The U. According to Tolbert, that's when Rueben's love for the Hurricanes was solidified.
I asked Rueben on Tuesday about Tolbert's influence in his football career.
"He was definitely very influential. He always had me in his van, coming down (to the University of Miami) and to camps." Rueben added, "He always had something Miami around me."
Tolbert recalls Rueben's mom posting social media reels of her son dunking basketballs between his 8th and 9th grade year. He knew his cousin was an another level athletically.
"I told his dad and his uncle that he's going to be the greatest Cane and greatest Bain out of all of us."
Tolbert said he had a strong feeling since Rueben's birth that he was destined to be a Hurricane.
Tolbert isn't Rueben's only family connection to Miami. Rueben's brother, Reginald, is on Mario Cristobal's staff. Rueben told me it feels surreal to finally be at The U and making plays weekly.
