Tyler Van Dyke Reveals What He Loves Most About Shannon Dawson's New Miami Offense
Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke is looking forward to a fresh start in 2023.
After struggling with injury and consistency in Josh Gattis' Miami offense last season, the Canes are turning the page.
Mario Cristobal hired former Houston and West Virginia OC Shannon Dawson. His quarterback-friendly "air raid" system helped Houston Cougars quarterback Clayton Tune throw for over 4,000 yards last year. Tune was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the 5th round of this year's NFL Draft.
At the ACC Kickoff, Van Dyke was asked what it is about Dawson's scheme that excites him "to elevate (his) skillset."
"The thing I love about (Dawson's offense) is the freedom he gives the quarterback," Van Dyke said. "Changing run plays to pass plays, passes to runs, and giving receivers routes based on what the defense gives you. It gives the quarterback a lot of freedom and it allows you to get the ball into the hands of your playmakers."
Van Dyke added, "I'm very grateful that Cristobal brought coach Dawson in."
Head coach Mario Cristobal added similar remarks. "What Shannon Dawson has done in his history really fits Tyler, his skillset, and the pieces around him."
Van Dyke began his career in a similarly dynamic offense under former OC Rhett Lashlee. In that 2021 season, Van Dyke threw for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns in each of Miami's final six games.
Even in 2022, under Gattis, Van Dyke appeared to be finding his form right before injuring his shoulder. He threw for 496 yards against North Carolina and 351 yards against Virginia Tech, before suffering his injury against Duke. He combined for 5 touchdowns to just 1 interception in those games.
Van Dyke noted that he's smarter and more experienced now. If he and his teammates can click in their new scheme, a bounce back year from the junior signal caller can be expected.
