Miami Officially Names Its Next Running Backs Coach
The Miami Hurricanes continue to build their coaching staff with the hiring of a running backs coach.
Replacing Tim Harris, Jr. is not an easy task. He did well for The U and will do the same as UCF's co-offensive coordinator. The next coach in charge of UM's talented running backs also possesses excellent coaching pedigree and recruiting acumen.
Matt Merritt is now officially a Miami assistant. His latest coaching stop would be at USF where his efforts are impressive according to UM's official release.
"USF ran for 182.8 yards per game (2,377 total yards) to rank third in the American Athletic Conference and posted 5,871 total yards (451.6 per game), the third-best mark in program history, in 2023. USF ranked No. 17 nationally in total offense and produced 415 points, the fifth-best mark in program history."
Prior Power 5 coaching experience includes being a graduate assistant for Ohio State while star NFL running back Ezekiel Elliott was in Columbus, and being an offensive analyst for Tennessee with top-notch offensive play caller and tactician Josh Heupel.
While at USF, Merritt's role as the associate head coach and running backs coach also provides him with experience in helping to manage many aspects of a football game. From how practices operate to in-game decision-making, he's now well versed.
His stops along the way at Georgia Southern, James Madison, Elon, Old Dominion, and Capital also aid his coaching prowess and recruiting connections.
Merritt has college recruiting experience from working in each of the following states: Ohio (Ohio State, Old Dominican, and Capital), North Carolina (Elon), Georgia (Georgia Southern), Florida (USF), Tennessee (University of Tennessee), and Virginia (James Madison).
Here's an official welcome to The U Mr. Merritt!
