Miami Spring Practice #4 | A Pair Of Spectacular Catches And Defensive Back Depth Increases
After a recess for UM Spring Break, media was back in the building today to catch up on the Hurricanes as they prepare for their spring game later next month.
Miami was able to see some one-on-ones today, which produced some highlight reel grabs. Leading the way was true freshman Elija Lofton, who made an insane one-handed grab with coverage draped all over him. Lofton has been receiving praise to start the spring, as despite unconventional size for the tight end position is a playmaker nonetheless.
A player who had probably his best practice was Shemar Kirk, as the former JUCO wide receiver caught nearly every ball thrown his way. While Kirk didn't record a catch during his first season at Miami, there was an apparent reason why Miami brought him in after totaling 1,446 yards and 15 touchdowns in 18 games at the JUCO level.
Regarding play from the other receivers, Xavier Restrepo had yet another great catch on Mishael Powell as their matchups seem to always produce something spectacular. After getting a look at his fellow teammates at the Pro Day yesterday, Restrepo hopes to show of his array of catches to scouts next year.
Joshisa "JoJo" Trader and Nathaniel "Ray Ray" Joseph also had great performances to be noted as well. Despite the depth in the room, both are making it tough for their coaches to keep them off the field come next season.
One of the bright spots today during practice was the health of the defensive back room. A few weeks ago defensive backs coach Chevis Jackson had just four healthy corners at practice, and today he added sophomores Robert Stafford and Damari Brown back to the mix.
Brown showed Miami he can produce last season but Stafford is a wildcard as we didn't see much from him in his freshman year. A former top-20 cornerback recruit, Stafford has the opportunity in front of him get some significant snaps going forward.
