Beyond quarterback, one could make a strong case for defensive tackle being the most important for the 2024 Miami Hurricanes recruiting class.

One of the nation’s top defensive tackle recruits that head coach Mario Cristobal and the Canes have been recruiting would be Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco prospect Jordan Thomas.

After seeing him live last season when Don Bosco headed south to play Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater, here’s an overview of what the big man can do, as well as a look ahead to the future.

At 6-foot-6 and over 290 pounds, Thomas showcased his upside and abilities in a multitude of ways. To begin, his powerful upper body strength allowed him to clog up the middle during several plays. He was taking on some double teams, but even then he was a lot to handle.

When the ball moved away from Thomas, he exhibited his desire to chase the ball carrier anyway. That was a great sign because so many defensive line recruits have taken plays off if the football goes away from where they were located.

Looking back at one more specific item, Thomas looked the part of a power player, and that’s what his style was. Bull rush, dip and rip, and similar power moves were utilized by Thomas. He knew what he was good at and didn’t try to get fancy.

When considering what Thomas could become once he’s entered college, he could be a mainstay at 3-technique or even at nose guard despite his height. One of the reasons why went back to his natural length.

Thomas had the long arms one would often associate with an offensive tackle prospect. Looking at his long-term potential, those long arms will help him to evade blockers and push the pocket.

He will need to continue to add pass rushing moves like any other young defensive lineman. Once Thomas adds more pass rush moves to augment his power techniques, he can make even more plays during passing downs.

In short, the Hurricanes would do very well to land Thomas. He's already a talented player and possesses quite a bit of upside, too.

This upcoming visit will be interesting. His offer list, as one would expect, has been a who’s who of college football. Keep an eye on Thomas and what happens next with his recruitment.
