I caught up with Miami Hurricanes verbal commit Isaiah Thomas on a new episode of Locked On Canes

The class of 2024 safety out of Clearwater Academy International explained why he chose early on, back on April 17th, that Miami was the only place for him.

When Thomas began taking visits, he "was trying to find a perfect school," he said. "Best fit. Best scheme. Great relationships. Great staff. Great everything. Miami checked off every box. Once I realized that, it was a go from there."

I asked Thomas when he decided Miami was the move. Interestingly enough, he came to that realization while on a visit to Florida State...

"I actually made that decision (to commit to Miami) in the Florida State parking lot. I had just finished my Florida State visit and coach (Jahmile Addai) called me and told me they were about to have Dylan Day (another safety) commit. Dylan is a great player as well. Just him telling me that showed how much respect he had for me as a person and a player. After that, I was like 'what am I doing going on these visits? I want to shut it all down. It's time to commit. I am very happy with who's here and what I can do here.' It was time."

Thomas appreciated the honesty and transparency from Coach Addai. He noted to me that he and Addai really connected, having grown up in similar families. Their fathers are both from Ghana. They also connected through film study and Isaiah appreciated the way Addai and defensive coordinator Lance Guidry ran defensive practices.

Thomas told me that Guidry employs a similar defense to what he plays in at Clearwater Academy International with five defensive backs. "He's very exotic. He likes to blitz. He likes to run everything. That was great for me."

Isaiah expects to primarily play strong safety at Miami, but has talked with Guidry about the possibility of moving around at multiple spots.

"I think he'll be able to move me around to nickel, corner, high safety, anywhere."
