Will the Miami Hurricanes get some good recruiting news this Saturday?

The Miami Hurricanes have missed on some of their top defensive tackle targets in the 2024 recruiting cycle. The Canes have an opportunity to close a great one this Saturday.

5-Star Mainland Daytona Beach defensive lineman LJ McCray will announce his verbal commitment this Saturday, October 21st, between Miami, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, and Auburn.

I sat down with colleague and recruiting expert Brian Smith to break down McCray's decision and where Miami stands.

McCray has a unique body type, standing 6-6, 270 lbs. His length and athleticism give him virtually unlimited potential. He began his high school career as a tight end before making the switch to the defensive line.

The Gators have long been considered the trending leaders here. Georgia has also been making a serious push. On Miami, I was informed several months ago that the Hurricanes consider McCray a priority target.

A recruiting source told me over the summer that the Hurricanes felt McCray can be better than any of the other top tackles in the class. Back then, his recruiting rankings didn't reflect that, but they do now. McCray was recently upgraded by 247 Sports as the number six prospect in the entire class.

The Hurricanes currently have verbal commitments from 4-Star DT Artavious Jones and 3-Star Daylen Russell. Meanwhile, Alabama transfer Jamil Burroughs has been training with the team and expected to debut as a Hurricane next season. There's also a chance that 5-Star Miami commit Armondo Blount could decide to reclassify from 2025 to '24.

It's notable that Smith feels there has been no clear frontrunner for McCray. No matter who he declares for on Saturday, the other four schools will certainly not stop recruiting him before national signing day in December.

Brian and I also discussed Miami's turnovers against North Carolina and Georgia Tech. What will it take for Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke to bounce back this Saturday night against Clemson?
