Two Michigan Football Defensive Players Enter Transfer Portal

One veteran and one freshman have decided to leave Ann Arbor.

It was beginning to look like the Wolverines weren't going to face much attrition until after the College Football Playoff. Entering Thursday the only scholarship player to enter the portal from Michigan was running back CJ Stokes.

But that changed on Thursday afternoon when two defensive players entered their names into the portal.

True freshman defensive back Cameron Calhoun and senior linebacker Joey Velazquez both entered the portal.

Calhoun, an Ohio native, committed to Michigan after the Wolverines defeated Ohio State in Columbus two years ago. Coaches praised the young corner and his entry into the portal comes as a surprise. Calhoun played in two games this season for Michigan. He came to Ann Arbor as a four-star recruit. Calhoun got a head start last season when he became an early enrollee with the Wolverines.

Velazquez, a two-sport athlete, has really excelled at baseball for Michigan. He's had a tougher time seeing the field in Ann Arbor. He is a three-year letterman and came to Michigan back in 2019. Velazquez has been with the Wolverines for all three Big Ten championships the past three seasons.

The Wolverines now have three scholarship players in the portal and two walk-ons.
